Review: Badi Assad plays pop hits her way on 'Hatched'

Brazilian guitarist and vocalist Badi Assad’s new album “Hatched” features distinctive and emotive renditions of global hits by contemporary artists Lorde, Skrillex, Alt-J, Hozier, and Mumford and Sons. The collection also includes an equally unique and striking cover of “The Hanging Tree,” the song sung by Jennifer Lawrence in the 2014 film “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1.”

In addition, Assad slips three gripping new originals into the album, one that finds her finger-style acoustic guitar playing and jazzy vocals as amazing as ever. “Hatched,” out Friday (Oct. 16), should appeal to Assad’s large, international audience while also winning over some more mainstream listeners in the United States. Seriously, her cover of Lorde’s “Royals” is every bit as catchy as the original but with a brilliant Brazilophilic makeover.
